Cambodia has an approximate population of 16 million as of 2017 with 1.5% annual growth rate spread over an area of 181,035 km2. The urban population comprises about 27% of the total population, of which around 12% are concentrated in Phnom Penh (NIS, 2014) and an estimated 36.3% of population in 2030 live in city areas. Higher population in urban cities are expected to increase over time due to urbanization and industrialization. Cambodia aims to become an upper middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050 in accordance with the Rectangular Strategy Phase IV adopted in September 2018.
